Can you hear the silent screams?

I tossed and turned in bed, unable to drift off to sleep. I tried shifting positions, using my phone, and even the all-time useless counting sheep. NOTHING worked. Exasperated, I took my phone and made my way to the bathroom. It was 4.12 am, and the house was still. I switched on the bathroom light and walked towards the basin when all of a sudden, something darted between my legs. I froze. This familiar speed and wiggly movements terrified me. True enough, a baby lizard froze a few steps ahead of me. I held my breath and backed away slowly. Once I was out of the bathroom, I dashed back to bed. I willed myself to sleep and prayed for those beady eyes to disappear from my mind.

For the next few days, I always stepped into the bathroom cautiously. I was scanning the surroundings before using the amenities.

About a week after that night, I forgot about the extra guest living in the bathroom. I went in for a shower and closed the door. I began to take off my shirt when a chill ran down my spine. I was still clothed, but I could feel an eerie coldness in the air. My heart started racing. The hairs on my arms stand on end. There was a deafening scream that thundered in my ears! I was home alone, and I knew what I heard was not audible. Frightened, I decided to leave the bathroom.

A few hours later, I decided that I waited long enough. Whatever was in the bathroom should have left by now. I walked towards the bathroom but paused two meters in front of the door, scanned for signs of danger, and moved forward after checking that the coast was clear.

This mini steps strategy was working! But just when I was at the edge of the bathroom and quite convinced that nothing was going to happen, I saw it. Out of the corner of my left eye, I saw the grotesque form of a lizard that was smashed in the door hinge. One of its eye was bulging while the other was shot far away from its body. It's body looked of a pasty consistency and was splattered around the door. It's innards were in full view and I started heaving at the sight of it.

I ran back to my room in fear as I realised, that scream I heard was likely to be from the lizard. Screaming in pain or for help as the pressure of the closing door sealed its fate.
